Studio together decided to go on vacation and come back with something different.
Wow! Larian Studios shocked the crowd at a game developer conference. Founder and CEO Swen Vincke revealed that the studio has no interest in expanding on its wildly popular role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3. He made it clear that fans shouldn’t expect any DLC, expansions, or a Baldur’s Gate 4.
The revelation was truly shocking. The studio has been tight-lipped about numbers, but estimates of Baldur’s Gate 3 sales range from 7.5 million to over 20 million, depending on who you ask. That low estimate seems unrealistic, considering the game is available on every major gaming platform except the Switch. Furthermore, as of August of last year, the game had sold over 5.2 million copies on Steam alone. The general consensus is “over 10 million,” though that’s vague.
Regardless of the actual numbers, few would deny the game’s popularity. Few would think that Larian would pass up the opportunity to make more money from this potential cash cow. Its developers have released a number of post-launch content, including a playable epilogue. Many believe that more content is on the way, particularly a sequel.
However, Larian has hinted that this is the case. At Gamescom 2023, Head of Product Tom Butler told IGN that the studio would continue to fix bugs in the meantime, but also mentioned taking a break and moving on to other things.
“We’re going to continue to fix the bugs for a while and then we’ll all take a break and then we’ll figure out what we’re going to do next,” Butler explained. “But right now, we’re really in discussions. We want to do more. We don’t know what to do yet.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a big game. The physical version comes in four discs. In my opinion, it’s one of the first games in a long time that I would consider finishing upon release – barring a few bugs. The game has more content than it needs to be, so it doesn’t rely on constant expansions like many gamers are hoping for.
Furthermore, Larian has stated that they are working on a cross-platform mod system that they hope to implement before they go their separate ways. As we’ve seen with games like Skyrim and Fallout 4, community-created mods can sometimes rival the studio’s own DLC efforts – Fallout: London, anyone? So BG3 could have years of community-supported content in the future.
As for what’s next, the studio is best known for its commercially successful Divinity series of role-playing games. Launched in 2002 with the game Divine Divinity, the studio’s most recent entries, Divinity: Original Sin (2014) and Divinity: Original Sin II (2017), have been very well received.
Both have earned a spot on our ongoing “Best PC Games (You Should Play)” list, so be sure to check them out if you haven’t already. Judging by the developer’s release rate, we should be ready for another Divinity game, but who knows?
